One of my favorites trees is Serviceberry. Covered in white flowers in spring, great foliage during the summer, bright yellow fall color and red berries that stay all winter long. How could you go wrong?

Serviceberry trees can either be multi stemmed (my favorite) or single stemmed. Good quality multi-stemmed plants will have 4-6 main branches. You don’t want more than that or it looks messy. You also want to make sure you prune all of the small branches and sprouts off of the main trunk up to about 4′ high as the plant matures. This will show off it’s great shape, smooth bark and plant architecture.

There is also a Serviceberry shrub that blooms at about the same time with the same flower as the ornamental tree.
